Battery passport questions, answered.
When is the EU battery passport mandatory?
From 18 February 2027, every LMT battery, industrial battery over 2 kWh, and electric-vehicle battery placed on the EU market must carry a battery passport, under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 (the EU Battery Regulation). The obligation applies to batteries placed on the market after that date — including units manufactured earlier.
Do I need one battery passport per model or per physical battery?
Per physical battery. Article 77(1) requires each individual battery to have its own passport with a unique identifier. A single passport covering a model or a production lot is not compliant. Our generator issues one passport per battery item, linked to its model and lifecycle.
Who is responsible — the manufacturer or the importer?
The economic operator placing the battery on the EU market. If you import batteries into the EU, the obligation is yours even if the cells were made elsewhere. Manufacturers selling directly into the EU are equally responsible.
What data has to be in the passport?
Battery identity and model, chemistry and technical specs, carbon footprint, recycled content, supply-chain due-diligence information, and lifecycle/state-of-health data — organised into Annex XIII access tiers (public, legitimate interest, authorities, and the Commission). Each field is exposed only to the audience the regulation allows.
How long does it take to create a passport?
Most users go from sign-up to a published passport with a printable QR code in under 15 minutes. There is no integration project — you enter your battery data, and the compliant public page plus QR are generated for you.
What happens if a battery that needs a passport does not have one?
A covered battery must have an active, properly registered passport before it is placed on the EU market or put into service. Non-compliance can mean market-access restrictions, customs or market-surveillance intervention, required corrective action, withdrawal or recall, and Member State penalties — which each Member State sets and which must be effective, proportionate and dissuasive. The commercial and reputational consequences usually arrive first.
Do I need an ERP integration to use this?
No. You can begin with spreadsheet or CSV uploads. ERP connections and APIs are available for businesses that want to automate passport creation, lifecycle updates or high-volume registry operations, but nothing about the compliance path requires an integration project.
Can a battery passport be updated after it is published?
Yes — and it must be. Passport information has to stay accurate and up to date throughout the relevant lifecycle. The EU DPP Registry supports versioning and records a Commission time stamp for each update. We support passport updates and version history so changes can be managed without needlessly replacing the QR code already printed on the product. You remain responsible for verifying the correctness of every update.
What information is visible to the public?
Not all passport information is public. Public data may include battery identification, manufacturer details, selected technical information and information supporting safe use, repair and recycling. Other data is restricted to authorised parties such as the Commission, customs and market-surveillance authorities, notified bodies, repairers, remanufacturers, second-life operators and recyclers. The exact split depends on the Battery Regulation and the detailed access-right rules, which are still being completed — we enforce public and restricted layers server-side rather than publishing everything.
How long will my passport remain accessible?
A battery passport must remain available for the period the applicable legislation requires and throughout the relevant battery lifecycle. Under EU DPP Registry rules, where sector-specific law defines no other period, registry registration data is deleted automatically 10 years after registration. Our own hosting commitment is contractual: for as long as your subscription runs your passports stay reachable for the life of the product, and you can export everything or move it to an independent provider if you leave.
Is the EU DPP Registry live, and can my battery passports be registered today?
The central DPP Registry went live on 20 July 2026 and your organisation can be enrolled and verified now, with an eIDAS qualified seal or signature. Registration of battery passports themselves opens once the European Commission publishes the semantic catalogue for the batteries product group. We prepare your data in registry-ready structures with item-level identifiers so registration is a step, not a project.
